The Tennis Ball: Friend or Foe?

FOE! Hidden dangers you should know:
Tennis balls are a popular choice for fetch, but while they may seem harmless, their design and materials pose serious risks – from dental damage to life-threatening choking hazards, tennis balls are far from the safest choice for dogs.
Some things to think about before you toss another ball:

1. Tennis balls can damage your dog’s teeth
Designed for high-impact sports, tennis balls have an abrasive, fuzzy surface that acts like sandpaper, wearing down enamel over time. Aggressive chewers risk cracked or flattened teeth, gum irritation, and premature wear. Vets even see cases of ‘tennis ball teeth’ or ‘blunting’ where a dog’s teeth are permanently damaged from constant chewing.

2. They’re a choking and blockage hazard
Tennis balls are the perfect size to get lodged in a large dog’s throat, leading to a life-threatening emergency. Even if swallowed in pieces, the rubber core or fuzz can cause intestinal blockages, often requiring surgery.
There’s an even greater danger for dogs with strong jaws: If a powerful chewer bites a tennis ball flat and it slides to the back of the throat, it can re-expand, blocking airflow.

3. Potentially harmful chemicals
Sports-grade tennis balls often contain gases (like nitrogen) to enhance bounce and flight through the air, along with dyes, glues, and rubber compounds that may be toxic. Additionally, the fuzzy exterior also traps dirt, bacteria, and pesticides from outdoor play, which dogs ingest while chewing.

4. Most tennis balls are made for sports – not for dogs.
Tennis balls lack durability, easily splitting into hazardous pieces. Their size increases choking risks for many breeds, and unlike dog-specific toys, they undergo no pet safety testing.

A disaster waiting to happen

Final Thoughts: Skip the Tennis Balls
While convenient, tennis balls simply aren’t worth the risks. Investing in safer, dog-approved toys protects your dog’s teeth, health, and safety.
The size of the (dog-friendly) ball is also of paramount importance – large dogs can easily swallow balls that are too small. Preferably choose a ball designed to facilitate breathing and airflow into a dogs’ lungs while they’re running & fetching – plus less risk if they accidentally swallow it!
